Biography
Hoping Chen began her film career as a screenwriter, co-writing the script for Taiwanese director Edward Yang's "Xiang Qi Le Ni." From 1999 to 2004, she produced and directed several award-winning documentary programs for Taiwanese television. Between 2004 and 2007, she created and produced a drama series based on documentary research, receiving critical acclaim and numerous prestigious awards. In 2008, she moved to the UK to study film editing. Hoping gained international recognition editing Singaporean director Anthony Chen's debut feature "Ilo Ilo," which premiered at the 66th Cannes Film Festival in 2013, securing the Camera d'Or and over thirty awards worldwide. She has since edited all of Anthony Chen's subsequent features. Her collaborations with directors including Claire McCarthy ("The Colour Room," 2021) and Geng Jun ("Manchurian Tiger," 2021; "Bel Ami," 2024) have evolved into long-term partnerships. In 2023, her work premiered with "Drift" (Sundance) and "The Breaking Ice" (Cannes), both directed by Anthony Chen. In 2024, she won Best Film Editing at the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival for "Bel Ami." Recent credits include Anthony Chen's "We Are All Strangers," that had its World Premier at the Berlinale Film Festival and was in competition for the Golden Bear, Gabrielle Russell's "The Reckoning of Erin Morrigan," Priscilla Ang Geck Geck's debut feature "Ah Girl”which premiered at the IFFR Film Festival, and “Under The Wave Off Little Dragon” directed by Jian Lou.
